Are you community-minded?

This qualification reflects the roles of community services, case management and social housing workers involved in the managing, co-ordinating and/or delivering of person-centred services to individuals, groups and communities.

At this level, workers have specialised skills in community services and work autonomously under the direction of senior management. Workers are usually providing direct support to individuals or groups of individuals. Workers may also be responsible for the supervision of other workers and volunteers. This qualification will teach you skills in case management, program coordination and the development of new business opportunities. Study Community Services at TAFE Queensland Brisbane

Very few careers can match those of community workers and support services in terms of job fulfilment. It's for those who care for others and includes areas such as counselling, community services, mental health and youth work. Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements however TAFE Queensland Brisbane has the following entry criteria:

  • To be eligible for the subsidised and concession price students must be an existing worker in the Community Services industry and meet eligibility requirements.
  • Computer literacy is assumed. Students also need to note the general industry requirements for criminal history check prior to working in the industry or entering the field work program, which is a compulsory part of the training.
  • Applicants are required to complete a Working with Children Check (Queensland) through the completion of a Blue Card Application (available from the institute)

If you’re under 17 years of age, special enrolment conditions may apply.

No specific resources are required to successfully complete this course.

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Important Information

Please be aware in some instances organisations may require students to undertake an Australian Federal Police Check (cost $42) and or apply for a Blue Card for placement.

Some Queensland Government funded services may require students to apply for a “Yellow Card Exemption Notice” as issues by the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services.

To be eligible for the Government Subsidised price, the students must be currently working the Community Sector.

VET Student Loans

VET Student Loans are an interest-free loan from the Australian Government that help students pay for their education and training.

TAFE Queensland receives the full loan amount for your course directly from the Government, and you repay your loan through the Australian taxation system once your income reaches a certain threshold.

You are eligible for a VET Student Loan if you:

  • are an Australian citizen; or
  • are a New Zealand Special Category Visa holder who meets long-term residency requirements; or
  • are a permanent humanitarian visa holder (resident in Australia for the duration of the unit); AND
  • have not exceeded the FEE HELP limit (see below); AND
  • have an Australian Tax File Number (TFN) or Certificate of Application for a TFN; AND
  • can provide a copy of your Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (year 12 certificate); or
  • are assessed as a minimum of Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ASCF) in both reading and numeracy

Please note that all students enrolling in an accredited course are required to provide a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front, you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

VET Student Loans

Higher Level Skills Subsidy

You're eligible for the Higher Level Skills Subsidy if you:

  • Are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • Live in Queensland full time
  • Are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • And don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate IV or higher level qualification.
  • Other restrictions or eligibility criteria may apply

Concession

You are eligible for the concession price of a course if you are eligible for subsidised training, and are listed on an Australian Government Low Income Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you hold a Department of Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Concession Card, or if you have a disability.
