Our Diploma of Photo Imaging is an extremely comprehensive photography qualification that will enable you to work across a range of professional areas from portraits to wedding, public relations to commercial, photo documentary to editorial, fashion to illustrative and landscape to architectural. The qualification will give you a solid understanding of how to light and capture images to suit any style or situation. You will learn basic photography fundamentals including assessing correct and optimal exposures, simple and sophisticated lighting, digital image capture and manipulation and professional wet processing/hand printing using colour and black and white film. You will also gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the psychology of an image and its construction as well as elemental graphic design.
Your photography studies will involve teamwork to present group projects and an exhibition. More advanced technical aspects are studied in second semester, where topics include digital asset management, colour management, folio production, business, finance and marketing. Conceptual, technical and organisational skills to use of a range of professional digital and/or film cameras and accessories to produce a folio of photo imaging work that demonstrates the ability to respond effectively to different photo imaging challenges and requirements.

All students are expected to have a 35mm DSLR camera with two interchangeable lens and a colour checker passport which they use with their camera.
It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

The successful achievement of this qualification requires you to complete all core and elective units from the list below. Electives may differ between TAFE Queensland locations and regions.
If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.
The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.
You are eligible for the concession price of a course if you are eligible for subsidised training, and are listed on an Australian Government Low Income Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you hold a Department of Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Concession Card, or if you have a disability. Students are required to have access to or own a professional quality digital 35mm SLR camera for the duration of the qualification. Cameras must have a full-frame sensor with manual capability as well as either a range of lenses or at least two quality zooms covering wide angle (24mm) to telephoto (200mm). For the purpose of the qualification the Nikon D800/D600 or Canon 5D meet the minimum standards required.
Students are also required to have access to a computer with Word and Adobe Photoshop and a portable hard disk (USB). Applicants need to be aware that additional sundry materials and equipment could cost up to $5,000.
