Entry requirements

This qualification has no formal entry criteria however TAFE Queensland Brisbane has the following selection criteria for this qualification;

School Leavers must have completed Year 10 or equivalent
Non school-leavers are selected according to eligibility and merit, vocational experience, previous study and personal competencies.

If you’re under 17 years of age, special enrolment conditions may apply.

Resources required

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

COTAH is a hub of industry activity with frequent visits from Hospitality employers to all campuses and we have a strong commitment to showing our students and our College in the best light - with professional presentation a must for this customer facing industry, Therefore Uniforms for Hospitality are compulsory across all TAFE Queensland Brisbane campuses. Uniforms are to be worn at all times on and off campus, theory and practical, plus during any/all excursions. This ensures that our students are recognised by Industry as highly employable graduates with impeccable standards of presentation and dress. 

Uniforms are included in the course cost. Students will be fitted in their first week of study. Students will be able to purchase any additional uniform items at their own cost.

  • Uniform provisions included in course costs are: 1 mandarin jacket; 1 Apron; 1 stripe shirt, 1 tie or scarf.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.


The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

You can receive a subsidy towards one certificate III qualification from a list of subsidised courses.

You're eligible for the Certificate 3 Guarantee if you:

  • Are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • Living in Queensland full time
  • Are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • And don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate 3 or higher level qualification.

If you're a Queensland resident, have just finished year 12 and are keen to start your studies within the next calendar year, you might be eligible to study fee free!

The Queensland government has identified a number of industries with a high demand for trained workers. To help fill these gaps, they will pay the full cost of a number of certificate III qualifications in high-priority study areas under the Certificate 3 Guarantee and User Choice programs.

We want school leavers to gain the important skills and training they need before starting their university studies or careers - debt-free.

Additional costs

There is an upfront cost approximately $100 in total associated with this course. Students need to supply their own black dress pants (not jeans or skinnys), black closed in leather shoes (no sneakers or sandshoes as this is a workplace health and safety requirement) and black socks or pantyhose.

Students who have access to a computer or tablet may wish to bring to classes to take notes.

Students can also access a range of print, copy, scan and fax services via MyPrint.

University pathways

If you want to go on to further study at university, TAFE Queensland has a pathway option to get you there.
