Our qualified teachers will show you how to develop your learning and communication skills helping you to speak, write and read English. You will also learn mathematical and visual numeracy skills. This qualification has no formal entry requirements, however all students are required to undergo an assessment interview to determine which certificate level they are best suited to enrol.

Resources required

No specific resources are required to successfully complete this course.

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.


Full-time and part-time options are available for this course. Generally, you are expected to complete 20 - 25 hours per week as a minimum. Your study pattern will be determined in conjunction with a teacher during your pre-training and assessment interview. The length of time it will take to complete the course will be subject to individual needs and progress.

Entry into this programme with TAFE Queensland Brisbane can be via the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) programme. Please visit the TAFE Queensland English Language and Literacy Services (TELLS) website for further information.


The successful achievement of this Certificate requires you to complete 9 units in total, including 1 core units and 8 elective units from the list below. At least 2 spoken text electives and 2 written text electives must be selected. Electives may differ between TAFE Queensland locations and regions.

Additional costs

If you are not eligible for AMEP or SEE - students will be required to pay $60 (subsidised) or $309 per module of study (full fee for service).

Students can also access a range of print, copy, scan and fax services via MyPrint.

At the beginning of each semester we host orientation events across our locations so you can meet your teachers and classmates, get to know your campus, and familiarise yourself with your study schedule. We also throw in a bunch of free activities, because... why not? We like to have fun.
