Entry requirements

This qualification has no formal entry requirements, however TAFE Queensland Brisbane has the following selection criteria:

  • Successful completion of Year 10 in the Australian secondary school system or its equivalent;
  • Sound levels of literacy and numeracy are essential for the successful completion of this qualification;
  • You will undertake 100 hours of on-the-job training over two school terms of vocational placement while completing your studies;
  • Students enrolling in the program MUST be eligible to receive a Working with Children Blue Card;
  • Students must have a Positive Notice Blue Card issued by the Public Safety Business Agency prior to commencing vocational placement. For further information regarding Blue Cards click here.

Resources required

No specific resources are required to successfully complete this course.

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Vocational Placement

Vocational Placement is an essential component of this qualification. Students will undertake 100 placement hours within a 9 month timeframe. Students are to source their own placement, in either a Primary or secondary school environment. If students have difficulty in finding placement TAFE Queensland Brisbane will assist. This placement will be in addition to class room activities and prescribed assessments. Students will be required to work the days determined by the placement provider. Students are expected to have in place strategies to manage family and work commitments in order to meet vocational placement days. Students will continue to be assessed against prescribed units of competency undertaken during their vocational placement. If their assessment results are unsatisfactory they will be deemed not competent against those prescribed units. Students must hold a Working with Children Blue Card before commencing vocational placement and ensure they present their student Identification Card to the school while on placement at all times.


The successful achievement of this qualification requires you to complete all core and 5 elective units from the list below. Electives may differ between TAFE Queensland locations and regions.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.


The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Higher Level Skills Subsidy

You're eligible for the Higher Level Skills Subsidy if you:

  • Are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • Live in Queensland full time
  • Are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • And don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate IV or higher level qualification.
  • Other restrictions or eligibility criteria may apply


You are eligible for the concession price of a course if you are eligible for subsidised training, and are listed on an Australian Government Low Income Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you hold a Department of Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Concession Card, or if you have a disability.
