A group of excited students and teachers took off to New York City in December 2014 to enjoy 10 days of intensive classes, excursions and workshops at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology). It wasn't all hard work though! The group enjoyed some guided tours around New York's most iconc creative meccas, as well as plenty of free time to explore the various fashion districts of the Big Apple.
Firstly, it's been crazy busy here in New York, and quite the challenge to get the time to sit down and write without collapsing after such full and exciting days.
Let's start at JFK where we met out transfer company.
Raymond was apologetic about our larger van being stuck in Downtown New York due to traffic jams, and asked we minded a stretched limo instead!
Needless to say, our young and excitable crew enjoyed our ride to Pennsylvania (7th Ave Mid Town NYC). We settled in for our first night walking the block to Macys to get some retail research in, as well as grabbing a slice of New York slice.
We woke up to a crispy cold day! We made our way uptown taking in some retail favourites such as Zara and Steve Madden. The girls enjoyed being in the hub of retail heaven! Moving quickly, (everything moves quickly) onto the Rockefeller Centre with its outdoor ice skating rink and New York's famous Christmas tree.
Then of course on to Saks 5th Avenue and Tiffany & Co, what can I say, we were completely aglow.
Late in the afternoon most of us experienced our first subway ride. What a buzz!
That night a group dinner finished off a very full on and exciting day. We are exhausted, but grinning from ear to ear!
Our first day of workshops at FIT.
This morning we had a fantastic class with Bob Shultz briefing us on finding hot trends and how to make them work for a business. This was a great insight for us on how to view trends from a merchandising perspective.
In the afternoon we were pounding the pavement again, this time with fashion designer and lecturer Kathlin Argiro. The garment district: what an experience! We were taken to some amazing places.
We spent the day researching luxury shopping, but not on 5th Avenue! We spent the day down in the Meat Packing District, Greenwich Village and Soho to take in the incredible funkier end of luxury shopping. Our fantastic guide Kathlin gave us a great history lesson of the rise of luxury market in this area. We saw some of the most innovative visual merchandising and window displays, we were kept on our toes!
The New York Fashion Study Tour was made possible thanks to TAFE Queensland Brisbane's partnership with Global Education Skills Alliance (GESA) and Rotary International District 9630. Find out more about our upcoming study tours.
